How to Care for Desigual Printed Clothing: Washing & Maintenance Guide
You spent €80 on a Desigual dress with a print that makes you smile every time you put it on. Then you throw it in the wash at 60°C with everything else, and three months later the magenta flowers look like they've been left out in a Limassol August. That's not the fabric failing. That's the care failing.
Desigual's prints are more complex than what you'll find on a typical high-street top. The layered technique, where multiple patterns overlap across the fabric surface, means there's more ink bonded to more fibre. More colour means more to protect. The good news? Protecting it takes about thirty seconds of extra thought per wash cycle.

How to wash Desigual clothes
Step 1: Turn the garment inside out
This is the single most important thing you can do. Turning printed garments inside out shields the print surface from direct friction against other clothes and the drum wall. Desigual's layered prints have more surface detail than a standard screen print, so friction damage shows up faster.
Step 2: Machine wash cold — 30°C max, gentle cycle
Cold water preserves dye bonds. According to TechGeeksApparel's printed garment care guide, washing printed clothing at temperatures above 40°C accelerates ink degradation by loosening the bond between dye molecules and fabric fibres. Stick to 30°C and select the gentle or delicate cycle to reduce drum agitation.
Step 3: Use mild liquid detergent — no bleach, no fabric softener
Powder detergent can leave undissolved granules trapped in print crevices. Liquid is cleaner. Bleach is obvious (it strips colour), but fabric softener is the sneaky one. It deposits a waxy coating over fibres that gradually dulls printed colours and reduces the vibrancy Desigual is known for. Skip it entirely. Desigual's viscose fabrics stay soft on their own.
Step 4: Do NOT tumble dry — air dry flat or on a hanger
Heat is the enemy of printed clothing. A tumble dryer subjects garments to sustained temperatures of 55–75°C while tumbling them against each other for 40+ minutes. For printed viscose, that's a recipe for shrinkage and print cracking. Hang dry in shade, or lay flat on a drying rack. If you're in Cyprus, your balcony will do the job in two hours flat during summer. Just keep the garment out of direct sunlight while drying, since UV exposure fades colours.
Step 5: Iron on the reverse side at low heat (if needed)
Most Desigual viscose/elastane blends barely wrinkle after air drying, so you can often skip ironing altogether. If you must iron, flip the garment inside out and use a low setting (silk/synthetic, around 110°C). Never press the iron directly onto the printed side. The heat can melt or distort the print surface, leaving a shiny patch that won't come out.
Fabric-specific care
Not all Desigual garments are made from the same material. Here's what to watch for by fabric type.
Cotton (most t-shirts, kids' clothing): The most durable option for washing. Pure cotton tolerates slightly warmer water (up to 40°C in a pinch) and holds up better across many wash cycles. Cotton Desigual tees typically last 50+ washes before any print fading becomes noticeable, provided you follow the inside-out rule. Cotton does wrinkle more than viscose, so you may need a quick iron on reverse.
Viscose/elastane blends (most dresses, blouses, knitwear): This is the fabric that demands the most caution. Viscose absorbs water and swells, which means it can lose shape if wrung or twisted while wet. Never wring a viscose Desigual dress. Gently press out excess water with a clean towel, then lay flat or hang to dry. The elastane component (usually 5%) provides stretch recovery, but that recovery weakens if you tumble dry repeatedly.

For everyday cleaning: Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth and mild soap. For stubborn marks, use a soft-bristled brush (an old toothbrush works) with a tiny amount of liquid detergent. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and let air dry.
For storage: Stuff the bag with tissue paper or a soft cloth to maintain its shape. Store in a dust bag or pillowcase. Keep it out of direct sunlight, which is particularly relevant in Cyprus where south-facing shelves can get intense afternoon sun through the window year-round. UV will fade a printed bag faster than you'd expect.
For zippers and hardware: If metal hardware tarnishes or stiffens, a drop of clear mineral oil on a cotton swab will free it up. Don't use WD-40 or similar sprays near the fabric.

Common care mistakes
Six things that will shorten the life of your Desigual clothing:
- Hot water (above 40°C). Loosens dye bonds and can cause viscose to shrink noticeably after just two or three washes.
- Bleach. Even "colour-safe" bleach is too aggressive for layered prints. If you have a stain, spot-treat with white vinegar or a dedicated colour stain remover.
- Overloaded washing machine. Too many items in the drum means more friction against the printed surfaces. Fill the drum to two-thirds maximum.
- Ironing directly on the print. The iron's soleplate can melt print layers, leaving a permanent shiny mark. Always iron on reverse.
- Storing in direct sunlight. This applies to bags, hanging clothes, and folded items near windows. UV breaks down dyes over weeks, not months.
- Dry cleaning. Many Desigual viscose garments carry a "do not dry clean" label. The solvents used in dry cleaning (perchloroethylene) can interact badly with certain print adhesives. Check the label first, but when in doubt, cold machine wash at home is safer.
